Carpet Types: Fibers, Styles and How to Care for Them

Two carpets that look the same can clean completely differently. Here’s what we check before we clean, written for San Angelo homes, with plain answers on which fibers handle dust, sun and pets best.

What Are the Main Carpet Fibers?

Almost every carpet in a San Angelo home is one of five fibers, or a blend. Here’s how they compare where it counts: traffic, stains and cleaning.

FiberStrengthsWeak spotsCleaning notes
NylonResilient, springs back from foot traffic, takes stain treatments wellMost nylon is acid-dyeable, so coffee, wine and soda can stain itHandles hot water extraction well
Polyester (PET)Soft, bright color, resists water-based stains, often made from recycled bottlesMats and crushes sooner in traffic lanes, and holds onto oily soilNeeds the right pre-spray for oily soil. Matting can’t be cleaned out
Triexta (PTT)Soft, with stain resistance built into the fiber. Often sold as SmartStrandUsually priced above basic polyesterCleans much like polyester
Olefin (polypropylene)Inexpensive, resists moisture and fading, common in Berber and outdoor carpetCrushes under heavy use, attracts oil, and friction or high heat can scar itLower heat and gentle agitation
WoolNatural, resilient, hides soil well, naturally flame resistantCosts more, and high heat, harsh chemicals or over-wetting can damage itLower heat, wool-safe products and careful drying

Triexta isn’t just a brand name. In 2009 the Federal Trade Commission recognized it as its own subclass of polyester. Blends, such as wool with nylon, get cleaned for the more delicate fiber.

What Are the Main Carpet Styles?

  • Plush and Saxony (cut pile): smooth and formal. They show footprints and vacuum marks.
  • Frieze: tightly twisted fibers that curl for a casual look, and very good at hiding footprints.
  • Level loop and Berber: flat, tough loops that resist crushing. A snag can pull a loop, so pets that dig and rough vacuum brushes are worth watching.
  • Cut and loop: a mix of both, often in patterns that hide soil and wear.

Builder Grade, Mid Grade or High-End?

Grade mostly comes down to the fiber, how dense the pile is and how tightly the yarn is twisted. Higher density and higher twist resist matting longer.

GradeWhat you usually seeWhere it shows up
Builder gradeLower density and twist, often polyester or olefinNew construction and many rentals
Mid gradeDenser pile with better twist, often nylon or triextaMost owner-occupied homes
High-endDense nylon, triexta or wool with high twistLong-term homes and formal rooms

A quick check you can do at home: fold a piece of carpet back on itself at a stair edge or closet. If you can see a lot of backing between the tufts, the pile isn’t very dense.

How Long Does Carpet Last?

Medium-traffic residential carpet usually lasts about 8 to 12 years, and a high-quality installation can reach 15 years or more with good care. Carpet rarely wears out from age. It wears out from grit grinding the fibers and from traffic lanes that never get deep-cleaned.

Which Carpet Holds Up Best in San Angelo?

  • Caliche dust and grit: resilient fibers with high density and twist, such as nylon, triexta or wool, recover better in traffic lanes.
  • Strong sun through west windows: solution-dyed fibers hold their color better than fibers dyed after the yarn is made.
  • Pets: triexta and polyester resist many water-based stains. Nylon with a stain-resist treatment also does well. Loop styles can snag with dogs that dig.
  • Hard water: every fiber benefits from a full rinse, because mineral and soap residue attract soil. Why that matters here.

How Do I Find Out What My Carpet Is Made Of?

  • Check the invoice or warranty paperwork from installation.
  • Look for a label on a leftover scrap in the garage or a closet.
  • Ask the builder, the previous owner or your landlord.
  • Or let us check at the walk-through before we quote.

Skip the burn test you see online. Lighting carpet fibers indoors is a fire risk and easy to misread.

Does the Fiber Change How Carpet Should Be Cleaned?

Yes. Heat, cleaning products and drying all get adjusted to the fiber, which is why we identify it first. For most carpet, Shaw Floors recommends professional hot water extraction every 6 to 18 months, depending on traffic. See how we clean.

What Does an OEKO-TEX Label on Carpet or Rugs Mean?

Some rugs and carpets carry an OEKO-TEX label. According to OEKO-TEX, STANDARD 100 is a label for textiles tested for harmful substances, covering every part of the product. It tells you about what went into the material, not how durable it is, so read it alongside the fiber, the grade and the manufacturer instructions for cleaning.

Carpet Fiber Guides

Care tips for every fiber are collected in the carpet care guides.

What is the most durable carpet fiber?

For foot traffic, nylon and wool are the most resilient, and triexta is close behind. Density and twist matter as much as the fiber itself.

Which carpet is best for pets?

Triexta and polyester resist many water-based stains, and nylon with a stain-resist treatment does well too. Cut pile is usually safer than loop if your dog likes to dig.

Is polyester carpet bad?

No, but it mats and crushes sooner than nylon in heavy traffic, and it holds onto oily soil. It works well in bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms.

Can all carpet be steam cleaned?

Most synthetic carpet handles hot water extraction well. Wool needs lower heat and wool-safe products, and some rugs such as viscose need very little water.

How do I know if my carpet needs replacing instead of cleaning?

If the backing shows through, the pile is crushed flat even after cleaning, or the pad has broken down, cleaning will not bring it back. We tell you honestly at the walk-through.

Not Sure What Carpet You Have?

We identify the fiber at the walk-through and give you a written price for the right method.
