Nylon Carpet: How It Wears, Why It Stains and How to Clean It
Nylon is the carpet we see most in busy San Angelo hallways and living rooms. Here’s what makes it tough, why coffee and soda still find their way in, and how to keep it looking good for years.
What Is Nylon Carpet?
Nylon is a synthetic fiber, and for decades it has been the go-to choice for busy rooms because it’s resilient: the fibers spring back after being stepped on instead of staying crushed. It also resists abrasion well, which matters in a town where grit and caliche dust get tracked in every day.

What Is the Difference Between Nylon 6 and Nylon 6,6?
| Type | Known for | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon 6 | Takes dye well, soft, often lower cost | Most residential carpet |
| Nylon 6,6 | Stronger molecular bonds, better heat and abrasion resistance | Commercial carpet and some premium residential lines |
Both can last a long time in a home. How dense the carpet is and how tightly the yarn is twisted matter about as much as which type of nylon it is.
Why Does Nylon Stain From Coffee and Soda?
Most nylon carpet is acid-dyeable. The fiber has dye sites that grab acid-type dyes, and that’s exactly the kind of dye in coffee, red wine, mustard and many soft drinks. According to Cleanfax, about 90% of residential nylon carpet gets a stain-resist finish, but those finishes slow staining down. They don’t make carpet stain-proof.
The fix is speed. Blot a spill right away with a white cloth and plain water, working from the outside in. Don’t rub, which frays the fibers and spreads the stain. Carpet stain removal.
How Long Does Nylon Carpet Last?
Quality nylon can last 10 to 15 years or more with good care. What shortens that is almost always the same list:
- Grit and caliche dust left in the pile, grinding the fibers
- Traffic lanes that never get professionally cleaned
- Soap residue from rental machines, which attracts new soil
- Furniture that never moves, leaving permanent dents
- Pet urine left untreated, which can damage the dye over time
Is Nylon a Good Choice for San Angelo Homes?
For traffic and dust, yes. Nylon’s resilience helps hallways and living rooms recover between cleanings. The one thing to watch is sun. Nylon dyed after the yarn is made can fade in rooms with strong afternoon sun through west-facing windows. Solution-dyed nylon, where color is added before the fiber is formed, holds its color better. Blinds or UV film help either way.
Is Nylon Carpet Good With Pets?
It holds up well to dogs running through the house and resists matting. Urine is the risk: left untreated, it can permanently change the color of nylon and soak into the pad. Treat accidents fast, and if the smell comes back on humid days, the urine has reached the pad. Pet urine and odor removal.
How Should Nylon Carpet Be Cleaned?
- Vacuum slowly, two directions, at least weekly in traffic lanes. Grit does the damage.
- Blot spills fast with plain water and a white cloth.
- Get professional hot water extraction every 6 to 18 months depending on traffic, which is what Shaw Floors recommends.
- Insist on a full rinse. Residue left in nylon re-soils it fast, especially with hard water. How we clean.
- Dry it quickly with AC or fans, and keep furniture off until it’s dry.
What Should You Never Use on Nylon Carpet?
- Bleach or strong oxidizers, which strip color from dyed nylon
- Colored towels for blotting, which can transfer dye
- Lots of soap or carpet shampoo, which leaves sticky residue
- Hard scrubbing with a stiff brush, which frays the fiber tips
Nylon vs. Polyester vs. Triexta
| Nylon | Polyester | Triexta | |

| Traffic and resilience | Excellent | Fair | Very good |
| Water-based stains | Good with treatment | Very good | Very good |
| Oily soil | Good | Holds onto it | Can hold it, cleans well |

Is nylon the best carpet fiber?
For durability in busy rooms, nylon is one of the best. Wool is also very resilient, and triexta is close. For low-traffic bedrooms, polyester can be fine for less money.
Can nylon carpet be steam cleaned?
Yes. Nylon handles hot water extraction well. The key is a full rinse so no soap is left behind.
Why does my nylon carpet stain so easily?
Most nylon is acid-dyeable, so colored drinks like coffee, wine and soda can bond to the fiber. Stain-resist finishes slow it down but do not stop it, so blot spills quickly.
How long does nylon carpet last?
Quality nylon can last 10 to 15 years or more with regular vacuuming and professional cleaning every 6 to 18 months.
Does nylon carpet fade in the sun?
Some can. Nylon dyed after the yarn is made can fade in strong sun, while solution-dyed nylon holds its color better.
